Walking pad or treadmill for a low ceiling?

A walking pad sits 7 to 13 cm lower than a treadmill. Here's how much ceiling each needs, and what you give up for those centimetres.

When a treadmill won't fit under a low ceiling, a walking pad usually will. Walking pads are flat, motorised belts with no console, sitting about 12 to 14 cm off the floor, against 20 to 25 cm for most treadmills. That difference is often exactly the headroom a loft room or garage is missing. But a walking pad is a different machine, not a shorter treadmill. This page sets out both sides; the checker shows which models fit your exact room.

How much ceiling each one needs

Minimum ceiling for walking on the flat, with 2.5 cm for shoes, 2.5 cm of stride bounce and 15 cm clear above your head.

Walking only. Jogging needs about 4 cm more and running about 6.5 cm more. Incline adds more again: about 13.5 cm at 15% on a full-length treadmill.

For walking, the gap between a walking pad and a typical treadmill is 6 to 13 cm. Under a 2.2 m loft ceiling, that's the difference between a 183 cm walker fitting and not fitting.

What a walking pad can't do

What you gain

One catch for desk walking: the deck lifts you about 13 cm, so your standing desk has to go about 13 cm higher than usual. Check that its maximum height reaches your standing elbow height plus the deck, especially if you're tall.

Common questions

How tall is a walking pad?

About 12 to 14 cm from floor to belt for most models. Treadmills are usually 20 to 25 cm, and incline trainers nearly 35.

Can I run on a walking pad?

Not really. Most stop at about 6 km/h, and even the 2-in-1 models with a fold-up rail have belts too short for a running stride.

Is a walking pad worth it for a loft room?

If you mainly walk, yes. It's often the only motorised option that fits under a sloping loft ceiling, and it stores away. If you want hills or running, it isn't a substitute for a treadmill.

Do walking pads work for tall people?

For headroom, better than any treadmill. For stride length, choose one of the longer belts, 120 cm or more, if you're over about 183 cm.
